Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Barnes grew up in a household where education, discipline, and hard work were highly valued. His mother worked as a schoolteacher and reading specialist, while his father worked for the post office and frequently took on a second job to support the family. Growing up in a family of five children, Barnes learned the importance of persistence and responsibility from an early age. Education became a central part of his journey. Barnes earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Purdue Global before completing an MBA at the University of Chicago with concentrations in Finance, Entrepreneurship, General Management, and Behavioral Science.
Throughout much of this period, he balanced demanding academic goals with full-time work. His career evolved from information technology into finance, where he currently works for a Fortune 100 company.
The inspiration behind his book series emerged from a personal goal-setting exercise. Barnes created an “I Should” list that included ambitions such as investing, earning an MBA, and writing a book. As he considered what kind of book he wanted to create, he found himself reflecting on the memorable experiences he shared with his daughter. He began writing those moments down and soon realized they could become stories that other families would enjoy.
The result was the Little Big Girl and Daddy series, a collection of books based on real-life adventures between father and daughter. This authenticity has become one of the defining qualities of the series. The stories feel relatable because they are rooted in genuine experiences rather than fictional scenarios. Readers are invited into moments filled with humor, curiosity, imagination, and affection.
